Tropes associated with this story include:
- Compelling Voice: Attempted and failed when a gag formula that Alchemist Smurf mixed up makes him believe he can compel his fellow Smurfs to do his bidding simply by command. He found that out the hard way when he tried this on Papa Smurf.
- David vs. Goliath: A direct reference to the biblical story is subverted at one point when a single Smurf tries to take down Azrael with a sling, but his tiny pebble harmlessly bounces off the cat's forehead. ("I always knew this whole David versus Goliath story was just make-believe!") It's also invoked by Gargamel when he cries over his defeat and claims he should win as he's bigger.
- Forced Transformation: Alchemist Smurf turns himself into a strange dragon-like creature and needs help to change back.
- Professor Guinea Pig: Alchemist Smurf: he tries to test his formula on other Smurfs, but everyone refuses, so he tests it on himself.
