Prologue: Expelled!

13-year-old Luz Noceda's life changes forever when she gets expelled from her school.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: The Nocedas live in Los Angeles, California rather than Gravesfield, Connecticut.
  • Anything but That!: Luz is not pleased to learn that her new school requires her to wear a uniform.
  • Bilingual Bonus: At one point, Camila says "No hay mal que por bien no venga." It's Spanish for "From bad things, good things will come", but it can also be translated to "Every cloud has a silver lining."
  • Establishing Series Moment: Luz's expulsion and being enrolled into St. James preps the series as a whole.
  • For Want Of A Nail: While Luz was suspended and would have been sent to a rehabilitation camp in "A Lying Witch and a Warden", here she was expelled. Not only that, but she doesn't encounter Owlbert afterwards, instead spending all of her time at home before being enrolled at St. James.
  • The Ghost: Anne and her mother are mentioned by Camila. Principal Hal is also referenced.
  • Minimalist Cast: Luz and her mother are the only characters to appear; everyone else was mentioned.
  • Plot Allergy: Even though Luz used non-venomous spiders for her griffin, one of her classmates was still allergic to spider bites, which led to her expulsion.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Although Camila was angry with Luz for getting expelled, she doesn't scold her right away, waiting a good amount of time for it to sink in before punishing her and telling her they'll find a way around it.
  • Time Skip: A few weeks pass between Luz getting expelled and Camila finding a new school for her to enroll in. During that time, Luz has been making up for the book report by doing chores around the house and taking online classes to keep up with her education.
  • Wham Shot: The name of the school on the brochure? St. James Middle.
