Recap / The Odd Couple S 4 E 14 The Moonlighter

Go To

Oscar's penchant for gambling gets him in trouble again when he uses the money Felix gave him for box tickets to bet on a horse. Unwilling to admit it to Felix, Oscar takes a job in a greasy spoon diner to earn back the money.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": While at the diner, Oscar insists on going by "Cookie."
  • Hash House Lingo: As might be expected, diner slang does make some appearances in the dialogue. When Oscar arrives at the breakfast table still exhausted from the previous night, he takes the breakfast plates Felix prepared, mumbling the diner lingo for them as he balances all of them on his hands.
  • I Gave My Word: Oscar tells Myrna that she can't tell Felix about him working in the diner to pay off the debt, and Myrna later namedrops the trope. However, she doesn't exactly abide by the spirit.
  • Loophole Abuse: Oscar told Myrna that she couldn't tell Felix what he was doing. However, when Felix asks, "Where?" in confusion, she says that Oscar didn't say she couldn't reveal that.
  • Opinion Flip Flop: When Felix finds out what Oscar is doing, he insists that he can't continue working in such a seedy place. He tells him that if the person whose money Oscar gambled away is a friend, he'll understand if Oscar just talks to him. Oscar comes clean, and Felix calls him a thief. However, he does ultimately show patience with him (albeit after some Disappointed in You words) and gives him a temporary job at his photo studio to pay off the remaining hundred dollars of the debt so he doesn't have to return to the diner.
  • Triple Shifter: Played realistically; Oscar does manage to hold down working night shift at a diner and working as a sportswriter, but he's exhausted. Both Felix and Myrna point out that he can't keep this up, and Felix says that Oscar will probably lose his job at the newspaper due to his tiredness.
