Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 3 E 23 The Murray Who Came To Dinner

Go To

Oscar's patience, already at low ebb thanks to troubles with work, sinks even lower when he discovers that Felix invited Murray to stay with them after his wife threw him out of their house. The inconvenience of the third lodger puts a strain on both him and Felix. Will the pair ever return to being the odd couple?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Adopted to the House: Felix invites Murray to stay with him and Oscar after his wife Mimi threw him out of their home. Unfortunately, he failed to clear it with Oscar first.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: After all their efforts to shoo Murray back home have failed, Felix talks to him and tells him he can see Murray is actually miserable and he belongs with his wife Mimi, to which he agrees. Felix declares to a flabbergasted Oscar that he has a talent for words. Then Mimi turns up and says Murray called her during their evening out and told her he was unhappy and wanted to come back to her. Felix immediately claims that he sensed this and just didn't have the confidence to say it.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Murray's wife threw him out because she believed he was cheating on her with a roller derby star named Chi-Chi Caballero. Actually, Murray had been assigned as her bodyguard.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title refers to the film The Man Who Came to Dinner.
  • Shout-Out: When Murray goes out for the day, Oscar calls him "Columbo".
  • Super Gullible: Having tired of their guest, Felix and Oscar set up a boring game night on Saturday to show Murray how dull and depressing the life of a swinging bachelor really is. Felix asks Oscar if Murray will buy the set-up, and Oscar scornfully answers that Murray is so gullible five crooks have gotten away from him by telling him to check his shoelaces. When Murray comes in, Felix tests him with this. It works.
