Recap / The Legend Of Zelda 1989 E 4 Kiss N Tell

Go To

While on a morning stroll, Zelda discovers a maiden in need of rescue from a dangerous Gleeok, a multi-headed draconic monster with no wings or arms. Despite being successful in distracting and even subduing the monster's flames with nothing but fruit, the maiden refuses to leave with Zelda because she wanted a "handsome hero" to rescue her. Right on cue, Link arrives to destroy the Gleeok, but when he gets a kiss from her, he turns into an anthropomorphic frog. With the hero cursed, Ganon attacks and kidnaps Princesss Zelda in the hope that it would get Link to surrender the Triforce of Wisdom in exchange for her release.

The episode contains the following:

  • Brainwash Residue: Link's frog instincts remain briefly even after the spell is broken. Zelda agrees to kiss him despite it no longer being necessary, but she changes her mind when Link eats a fly out of force of habit.
  • Decoy Damsel: The maiden that Link and Zelda save is actually a Gibdo in disguise, who was meant to fool Link into kissing her in order to trigger a curse.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Apparently, calling the Gleeok a "three-headed freak" is a step too far and all three heads seemed to be genuinely hurt from it. They try to tell the disguised Gibdo to knock it off, though she excuses it as being part of her character as a distressed maiden.
  • Forced Transformation: Link is transformed into an anthropomorphic frog with webbed hands and a frog face that's ugly enough to shock both Princess Zelda and Spryte.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Ganon ambushes the heroes to kidnap Princess Zelda while Link is transformed, rendering him unconscious and Zelda getting spirited away into his lair. Once inside, he has the gall to ask her for a kiss while she's being held hostage in exchange for the Triforce of Wisdom. Naturally, she threatens to kick him.
  • My Instincts Are Showing: With his new frog form, Link has a habit of eating flies with his prehensile tongue, which actually gets a frightened scream from Spryte more than once because she's scared that he might accidentally try to eat her next given that, as a fairy, she has bug-like wings.
  • Our Hydras Are Different: The Gleeok, naturally, since he's a fire-breathing draconic creature with three heads. Strangely, he doesn't present the usual issue that appears whenever fighting Gleeoks. Even within the show, sometimes the heads can still attack when they are separated from the body, similar to the actual boss fight within the games. However, when Link zaps two of his heads, they instantly disappear instead and the Gleeok stays one-headed when he's seen again inside Ganon's Evil Jar.
  • True Love's Kiss: Played With. The actual requirement to lift the curse is to receive a kiss from a princess, though the episode initially frames the solution as it being only possible between Link and Zelda before the reveal that Spryte is a princess.
