Recap / The Golden Girls S 05 E 14 Triple Play

Go To

"Triple Play" is an episode in the fifth season of The Golden Girls.

Miles' daughter tells Rose to stop seeing him, Sophia has received over $100,000 in Social Security checks, and Blanche rents a car and pretends to sell it so that she can meet men.

Tropes:

  • Pooled Funds: A variation of this occurs when it's revealed that Sophia has received more Social Security money from the government than she should have due to a computer error. Dorothy convinces her to send the overpay back, and Sophia reluctantly agrees but notes that she hopes they'll want the money back after an 83-year-old woman rolled around naked in it.
  • Preemptive "Shut Up": Dorothy does this to Sophia twice in this episode. The first time involves Dorothy saying "don't say it, ma" when Dorothy anticipates Sophia to be on the verge of saying something rude. The second time? She covers Sophia's mouth using one hand without saying a word — or even looking at Sophia's direction, for that matter.
  • Stealth Insult: Dorothy delivers one at the expense of Stan, who doesn't appear in this episode, when discussing with Blanche about the latter's scheme of pretending to sell a car to meet men.
Blanche: You can tell a lot about a man by the way he drives.
Dorothy: You know, it's true. Sometimes Stan couldn't even get the key in the ignition.
