Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 19 Flowers For Barry

Go To

A Plot: After forgetting his dating anniversary, Barry rushes to Ginsey Kremp's florist store to buy a bouquet, and ends up getting a job arranging flowers while her husband is out of town.

B Plot: Beverly realizes that dating Joe Perrot as an adult is very different from dating in her youth.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Barry starts calling Ginsey "Ginser Ale" after she helps him deal with stress and he forms an emotional bond with her. He initially forbids her own husband from using that nickname for her as well, but relents after realizing it was rude of him to try and monopolize her attention.
  • Better as Friends: At the end of the episode, Beverly and Joe Perrot have broken up, as Beverly realizes she was only physically attracted to Joe and can't connect with him on an emotional level. However, they maintain their friendship, with Beverly gifting him some vegetarian food while they work on school matters together.
  • Be Yourself: Before Beverly's date at the start of the episode, Erica encourages her to be herself, but "a less pushy" version of herself just in case. After Beverly changes herself, Erica further encourages this. Even Mr. Perrot himself states that it's alright for her to be herself after learning she lied about her interests to impress him...only for her to realize that her true self might not actually be as interested in Perrot anymore now that she knows him better.
  • Changing Yourself for Love: Struggling to connect with Mr. Perrot on their date after realizing they have no actual shared interests, Beverly learns that he's a vegetarian birdwatcher that prefers books to television, and quickly claims to be the same. She then studies various topics to maintain the lie, but starts struggling when going birdwatching involves a long hike that exhausts her, and the lie completely unravels when Perrot wants to eat dinner at the Goldberg house and they fail to hide all of the televisions and meat.
  • Disgusting Vegetarian Food: When Mr. Perrot takes Beverly out for a tofu meal while she's lying about being a vegetarian, the best she can say about the meal is that it's "so mushy".
  • Gift-Giving Gaffe: After Adam and Joanne help Barry realize he shouldn't have freaked out at Ginsey for wanting to spend more time with her husband instead of helping him deal with stress, Barry apologizes by working with her husband to attempt to make floral art of her...which looks hideous and used a lot of the store's more expensive flowers. Ginsey admits the gesture was nice but they all immediately help her dismantle it after presenting it to her.
  • Mistaken for Romance: In The Tag, Pop-Pop assumes that Ginsey inviting him to a meal at a restaurant is a date, and has to be corrected by her...and her husband, who was sitting next to her the entire time Pop-Pop was listing what to expect from a relationship with him.
  • Real-Person Cameo: The real Chad Kremp appears in the episode playing the role of Ginsey's husband Charles; while he's had this role since replacing Tom Cavanagh in Season 4, it's specifically pointed out in The Tag.
  • Third Wheel: Barry becomes a changed man after helping Ginsey Kremp at the florist shop with her flower arrangements, learning how to manage his stress and becoming more peaceful and kind to others. However, when Ginsey's husband returns from his business trip, he ends up freaking out because he can no longer have one-on-one talks with Ginsey and ends up fired from his new job after making a scene.
  • The Unfavorite: Without even appearing in this episode, Uncle Marvin gets this treatment when Pop-Pop tries giving Beverly relationship advice and talks about how he met his wife and produced "Murray and some other kid".
