Congregation
The survivors of the speed limit change all collect on the Behemoth.
Tropes:
- Chekhov's Gun: The Behemoth's communications laser gets used for communications at the beginning of the episode, and then Ashford proposes using it as a weapon at the very end.
- Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Anna's "Reason You Suck" Speech to Clarissa highlights this; she notes that any excuses she tries to make to herself for the horrible things Clarissa's done fall flat, because there are plenty of other people out there who have problems just as bad or worse and haven't done these same bad things.
- Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Clarissa lurks out of sight in her cell as Naomi (the woman she recently tried to kill) visits Holden (the man she slaughtered thousands trying to smear). She's clearly listening as they're reunited, clearly dizzy with relief at each other still being alive, and Holden all but cries on Naomi's shoulder at all the people who've died.
- Precursors: The civilisation that made the protomolecule were these. Holden describes them as "strange, bright minds” that were wiped out by an unknown agent.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Anna gives a gently-spoken but harsh one to Clarissa in the brig of the Behemoth, which also serves as one to herself to a much lesser degree:Anna: When Amos offered to kill you, I wanted to let him.
Clarissa: Why didn't you?
Anna: I keep looking for a way to care about you. I think, "Her father was a terrible person." But a lot of people have terrible parents, and...I think "Well, she's clearly a damaged person", but then...who isn't? So, I'm down to "Maybe she has a brain tumor?" Beat Do you have a brain tumor?
Clarissa: (As a tear runs down her cheek) ...No.
Anna: It wasn't mercy. Um...it was vanity. I didn't want to think of myself as someone who wanted vengeance.
Clarissa: Are you asking for my forgiveness?
Anna: No. *Turns to walk away*
Clarissa: You're a coward! *Anna stops* You should have let him kill me.
Anna: You don't get the easy way out. *Walks away* - This Is Gonna Suck: Clarissa is not happy to find herself in a cell near James Holden, the person she's concocted an elaborate plan to smear at the cost of thousands of lives. Her face is a picture as he, not knowing who she is, tries to make friendly chitchat as he would with anyone else.Holden: So. What're you in for?
