Recap / The Dick Van Dyke Show S 3 E 20 The Brave And The Backache

Go To

Laura wants to spend a romantic weekend with Rob in the woods, but the previous times they'd planned such an outing, they'd been forced to cancel due to Rob developing a sudden illness. Millie suggests the illnesses were psychosomatic, reflecting Rob's subconscious aversion to spending extra time with Laura. This puts additional pressure on Rob to make sure the outing happens and that nothing unexpected throws their plans off course again.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Gas Lighting: An apparently unintentional example. Millie leads Rob and Laura to believe his sudden backache is purely psychological. (It isn't.)
  • Epiphany Therapy: Averted. At the psychiatrist's office, Rob thinks he has an epiphany that has cured his backache, but he quickly discovers it didn't.
  • Expy Coexistence: Rob mentions The Twilight Zone. A previous episode featured a parody that Rob called the "Twilo Zone."
  • Freudian Couch: Rob lies on a couch in the psychiatrist's office only because his backache makes it very difficult for him to sit upright.
  • Freudian Excuse: While talking to the psychiatrist, Rob temporarily becomes convinced he's averse to the campground where they're planning to stay because it brings up an unpleasant memory of his being bullied as a kid.
  • Placebo Eureka Moment: Rob has one of these in the office of his psychiatrist friend, who's simply throwing every question back at Rob, but he quickly discovers it isn't the solution after all.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Rob's desire to avoid getting sick leads him to scramble away from Sally, who has a cold, and that's what causes him to injure his back.
