Go To

Alice's old flame, Mark Millard, re-enters her life, wanting to sweep her off her feet. He then presents her with an seemingly prospective investment proposal that Mike senses may be too good to be true. The scam unravels when Alice, preparing to go to the bank, casually mentions the investment proposal to Carol, who asks about the business involved. Alice admittedly has no idea, as she had gotten caught up in the moment and didn't think to ask. Carol then reports the suspicious proposal to Mike, who, in turn calls a friend of his who works at the District Attorney's office to investigate Mark Millard's background.Eventually they uncover everything about Mark's shady past, and inform Alice about the attempted scam. Mark arrives, but Mike reveals the jig is up, as his friend from the District Attorney's office is coming over for questioning. Mark attempts to escape out the back door, but he runs headfirst into a frozen leg of lamb, being delived by Sam the Butcher, and is knocked unconscious. Alice retaliates on her would-be scammer by pouring a watering can of water over his head, as Mike, Carol, Sam and the worker from the D.A.'s office look on.

Tropes present in this episode:

  • Con Man: Mike is suspicious that Mark Millard's investment scheme is too good to be true … checks it out and confirms his suspicions.
    • Although the plot of a con artist at work had been seen in many crime dramas beforehand, such as Dragnet, the plot involving Alice unwittingly becoming a mark in Millard's scheme was perhaps one of the earliest in a situation comedy episode, and certainly one where a regular character was the potential victim.
  • Oh, Crap!: Mark, when Mike informs him his friend from the District Attorney's office is on his way over.
  • Old Flame: Mark Millard, Alice's boyfriend from at least two decades earlier.
  • The Reliable One: Sam, who is the accidental hero when Millard – realizing he's been found out and tries to flee – runs into a large leg of lamb the butcher is carrying to the house, knocking him out cold. Alice, realizing Sam has her true interests at heart, then takes her butcher boyfriend back.
