Recap / Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann S 1 E 27 The Lights In The Sky Are Stars

Go To

Gurren Lagann emerges from Nia's ring to free her from the Anti-Spiral's grasp. Soon enough, the surviving members of Team Dai-Gurren; Yoko, Viral, Gimmy, Darry, Dayakka, Leyte, Leeron, Attenborough, Cybela, Gabal, Tetukan, Boota and Lordgenome, join up as Gurren Lagann goes from Arc-Gurren Lagann to Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann to its ultimate form: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

The Anti-Spiral decides to fight among the galaxies by manifesting the Granzeboma to fight on equal terms, so as to cause utter despair when the Anti-Spiral triumphs. Yoko manifests a galaxy sized rifle and with back up fire from Gimmy, Darry and Attenborough, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann fires at the sphere between the Granzeboma's horns , which is revealed to be the Anti-Spiral's homeworld. The Anti-Spirals were originally a spiral race, but halted their evolution and began exterminating their fellow Spiral races. The Granzeboma hurls Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann across several galaxies causing a portal to Earth to open. The Granzeboma attempts to reach Earth but Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann fires super dimensional anchors at the Granzeboma to swing it away, causing the people of Earth (human and beastman alike) to cheer.

Simon tells the Anti-Spiral that the tomorrow that the Anti-Spiral set up for the Spiral races is not the tomorrow they fight for, but rather it is the tomorrow that the Spiral races set out for themselves and they will fight to protect the universe from the Spiral Nemesis. The Granzeboma grabs a pair of galaxies to generate the devastating Infinity Big Bang Attack. Lordgenome decides to manifest the Lazengann and perform the Lazengann Overload to absorb the Infinity Big Bang and convert it to a giant drill which Tengen Toppa uses to attack the Granzeboma, much to the disbelief of the Anti-Spiral.

Simon: "Mark my words. This drill will open a hole in the universe, and that hole will be a path for those behind us! The dreams of those who have fallen, the hopes of those who will follow! Those two sets of dreams weave together into a double helix, drilling a path towards tomorrow! That's Tengen Toppa! That's Gurren Lagann! My drill is the drill THAT CREATES THE HEAVENS!"

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and the Granzeboma rush at each other as they produce drills in an attempt for each to destroy the other. Super Galaxy Dai Gurren emerges but is pinned down by drills from the Anti-Spiral homeworld, then Arc Gurren Lagann, then Gurren Lagann. Finally, Viral in Gurren launches Lagann (with Simon and Nia) to perform Lagann impact and drill a hole in the Anti-Spiral. When the Anti-Spiral asks Simon to protect the universe, Simon replies:

"Of course we will. Humanity's not that stupid."

With the Anti-Spiral defeated, the freed Spiral races contact Team Dai-Gurren with messages of joy. A week after returning to Earth, Simon and Nia get married. After the two of them kiss, Nia disappears. Simon says that it's all right, for they both knew that this would happen, since Nia was a virtual lifeform created by the Anti-Spiral, once it was destroyed, Nia would not last long. When Gimmy asks Simon to use Spiral power to bring her and all those who perished back, Yoko says that Simon is not a god and Simon himself states that bringing the dead back would get in the way of the new generation. After handing his core drill to Gimmy and leaving government duties to Rossiu, Simon walks away.

Epilogue: Twenty years have passed.President Rossiu and Leeron discusss the Galactic Spiral peace conference and hope it goes well. An older Yoko, now known as principal Yomako, receives a hologram from Naakim who has grown into a pilot of the Graperl squadron led by the now adult Gimmy and Darry who are the new pilots of Gurren Lagann. In Earth orbit, the Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren, with Viral as its captain, is preparing to launch.

In a small village, a small boy tries to drill a hole in a coconut without much success. A man in a cloak tells the boy that he's been using too much force and that he should drill more gently. The advice works, but when the man tries to ask who the Hell does the boy think he is, the boy just ignores him, causing the man to state that he's just nobody. The boy watches Gurren Lagann and the Graperls blast off to space and wonders if he'll be able to go. The man, revealed to be an older Simon (with Boota by his side), tells him that he can, for:

"The lights in the sky are stars. They're stars where our Spiral cousins are waiting for us."

THE END

Tropes in this episode:

  • A God I Am Not: Why Simon won't use Spiral power to revive those who have died.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Anti-Spirals are beaten and entrust the universe to the spiral warriors. Galaxies are freed from their grasp and Nia is saved. However as she was part of the Anti-Spiral she likewise disappears along with them. She holds out until their wedding and telling Simon she loves him before she finally goes. Simon hands control of Gurren Lagann to Gimmy and Darry before Walking the Earth with Boota by his side. Not exactly the flashiest exit for Earth's greatest hero, but he has no complaints.
  • Character Catchphrase: After Simon shows the kid how to properly use a drill, he almost says his catch phrase, but stops when he notices the kid is too busy drinking the coconut he opened with his drill.
Simon: Heh, I guess I'm nobody.
  • Grand Finale: And also a Distant Finale.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Old Coco, who up until now had never uttered a single word, says the following: "Welcome back, Mistress Nia."
