Tommy, a young man on holiday in Jamaica, (Michael Ontkean) meets a local stranger (José Ferrer) who offers him an unusual bet. If Tommy's lighter works ten times in a row, he will give him a Jaguar. If it fails, he will chop his finger off. Tommy accepts the wager despite his girlfriend's doubts.
Examples:
- Deus ex Machina: Carlos's wife suddenly arrives just in time to save Tommy from the bet.
- Fingore: If Tommy loses the bet, he will have a finger cut off. Carlos's wife has already lost most of her fingers.
- The Bet: Forms the plot of the story.
- The Gambling Addict: Exaggerated with Carlos, who has lost all his possessions to his wife when gambling and continues to make bets he can't afford. His wife seems to be one as well.
