After a psychoanalyst connected to the Mills sisters mysteriously commits suicide, Ichabod and Abbie visit Abbie's sister Jenny at the psychiatric institution. When others commit suicide as well, the Witnesses learn that the source of the mysterious deaths is the Mohawk dream spirit Ro'kenhronteys, or the Sandman. By entering the dream world of this spirit, they are able to resolve the problem as well as confront their past guilt and atone for them. When Abbie goes to visit her sister a second time, she learns that Jenny has escaped.
Tropes present in the episode:
- Accomplice by Inaction: All of the Sandman's targets. One way or another, they caused Jenny's institutionalization by not doing something they should have.
- Fanservice: Abbie in a black bra for the dream ritual.
- The Sandman: The episode is about Ro'kenhronteys, aka a demonic version of the Sandman (also known as that in the series) that Ichabod and Abbie have to fight against to save more people of dying in dreams because of him, including Abbie's sister.
- Title Drop: Ichabod quotes the Edmund Burke speech from which the episode takes its name.
