Recap / Seinfeld S 8 E 3 The Bizarro Jerry

Go To

Elaine makes a new group of friends who are complete opposites to Jerry, George and Kramer. Elsewhere, Kramer bluffs his way into an office job.

Tropes:

  • Bizarro Universe: Elaine is the constant between the two "realities", which have opposites not just in characters, but in locations and camera angles, too. On top of being a Shout-Out to the Trope Namer, Kevin even has a Bizarro Superman statue in his apartment.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Gillian, Jerry's date with man hands. She frequently proves herself capable of obscene feats of strength much to Jerry's horror, such as casually ripping a lobster to pieces and managing to remove the cap on a bottle that isn't a twist-off. By the episode's end, she accidentally winds up breaking Jerry's wrist when she tries to stop him from rifling through her purse, with Jerry complaining to his friends later that she almost ripped his arm out of his socket.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Jerry’s insecurity about Kramer’s job pulling him away from their friendship reads Like an Old Married Couple where the homemaker is looking for more time with the working spouse.
  • Good Is Boring: Kevin’s gang is far sweeter and saner than the main cast, but their niceties are treated as pretty vanilla and slow: among other things, Feldman is casual enough with Kevin that he can buy him groceries, but also so formal that he has to address himself by name and location every time he comes into Kevin’s apartment.
  • Hypocrite: Despite supposedly being kinder and gentler versions of the Seinfeld gang, Kevin and his friends immediately give her the boot after she does her trademark "Get Out!" move and shoves him so hard that he falls down. It's understandable that he wouldn't want to be around someone who'd do that but given that she's genuinely sorry and that it was an accident, it seems a little harsh to treat her like This Is Unforgivable!.
  • It Makes Sense in Context: Played for Laughs when George is calling Jerry and ranting about "not being able to get back into the forbidden city".
  • It Was Here, I Swear!: George to Jerry after he takes him to the nightclub that was full of beautiful women, only to find that it's a meatpacking warehouse. However, under the sawdust is the crumpled picture that George discarded the night before.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Jerry treats the events of the episode as such, screaming that "the whole system is breaking down!" on him after Kramer pretends to work at an office firm, George begins going to a model club, and Elaine finds a Bizarro group of nicer guys to hang out with. Played for Laughs by having the episode take place over four days.
  • Status Quo Is God: Elaine rejoins the group after her new friends don't take kindly to her usual habits.
