Recap / Scrubs S 5 E 5 My New God

Go To

Dr. Cox's sister arrives at the hospital. She's a born-again Christian who wants him to participate in his son's baptism. Perry, of course, wants nothing to do with it, and her for that matter.

  • Auto Erotica: Elliot has a flashback to some sexy times in a car that was interrupted by a bear.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Cox and his sister end the episode on a much better note than they started on.
  • Bears Are Bad News: When Turk says he was trained to believe a baby is the worst possible consequence of sex, she flashes back to a time with a boyfriend... that ended with a bear ripping his arm off.
  • Christianity is Catholic: Jordan brings Jack to a traditional Catholic baptism, while Paige describes herself as born again, and thus is probably in one of the evangelical sects.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: It was played for laughs in an earlier episode when Cox said his father's idea of a present was to throw a beer bottle at his head and miss. This time, it's a frank admission that when he wasn't being abused, he got to watch his father abuse the rest of the family.
JD: [incredulous] How'd you end up with a born again Christian sister?
Cox: I dunno. Maybe the TV was broken one day and she picked up the Bible and found it to be just a darn good read. Or maybe it had something to do with our mother's ability to watch silently as our dad drunkenly knocked us from room to room. Whadaya think, there, newbie?
JD: Probably the room to room thing...
  • Mistaken for Thief: Janitor tricks JD into robbing an elderly Asian couple's home.
  • Parental Abuse: We get a more detailed description of Cox's father's behavior.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: Turk discovers he loves it when Carla is angry at him during sex, so he starts making it a point to piss her off just as they're getting started.
  • Straw Atheist: Cox is an atheist, but he normally never makes a big deal out of it. However, he hams it up once Paige arrive, not because it annoys him that she's religious, but to hide how painful it is for her to be around, because seeing her reminds him of nothing but their incredibly painful childhood.
Cox: I worked hard to forget every single thing about our childhood, but when I see you... I can't think about anything else.
Paige: It's hard for me, too, Perry.
