  • Armor-Piercing Response: Jackie's remark to Dan about having another job so he wouldn't notice her makes him leave seething angry. (It didn't help that he had just ended a phone call in which he found out he was turned down for a job.)
Jackie: Well, Dan, if you had a job you wouldn't even notice so much.
  • Berserk Button: When Jackie says that Dan's "special chili" is bland, he loses it.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Dan tells Roseanne that if Jackie makes one more wisecrack about him, he's going to tie her to a chair and make her watch 15 years of their home movies.
  • Everybody Has Standards: Dan can take Jackie's insults about him but nobody insults his cooking. "Hey! You can insult my wife and you can insult my children, but never bad mouth my chili!".
  • Friend Versus Lover: Or sister versus husband. Dan and Jackie argue and Roseanne is caught in the middle as the two of them pull her in each direction for support.
  • The Heart: Roseanne tries to resolve Dan and Jackie's fighting.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Jackie pushes Dan's buttons, he doesn't say anything. He just storms out quietly and slams the door.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: This is one of the initial episodes of Roseanne in which we see the constant love-hate relationship between Dan and Jackie. In the beginning of the series, Dan and Jackie were fighting a lot of the time, we see their true feelings in this episode.
