- An Aesop: A person's hobby shouldn't necessarily be the same as their career; otherwise it's no more enjoyable than the next job. For being the school janitor, Hank is good at math and even likes it. But he chooses to remain a janitor because if he became a professional mathematician, he wouldn't be able to simply do math for fun anymore.
- Hidden Depths: Hank the Janitor actually has potential as a talented mathematician, to the point he does math for the fun of it. Therein lies the reason why he's a janitor and not a professional mathematician: if math was his career, he wouldn't be able to do it for fun anymore.
- Wham Shot: Our young heroes leave out a new complicated math problem for the mystery mathematician to solve, expecting a young prodigy to come marching in. Instead, it's just Hank. ...who solves it without fail!
