Recap / Reaper S1E2 "Charged"

Go To

Sam, Sock and Ben have to catch an escaped soul causing blackouts across the city.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Chekhov's Gun: The vessel for the episode is a remote-control toy-car. The antennae to the remote is used as a lightning rod that absorbs Arthur in his electricity form, though curiously Gladus insists on the toy car being returned too, implying that the car is somehow integral.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Sam's "Devil Power" for the day is that he gets zapped with astatic electricity with everything he touches.
  • Clingy MacGuffin: Here we see that if Sam tries ignoring the vessel box without opening it, it "stalks" him, inexplicably appearing nearby.
  • Kick the Dog: At the end of the episode, The Devil rolls a cart in the way of an incoming truck. As we hear the car crash, The Devil just gives a smirk.
  • Mirthless Laughter: Sock bursts into hysterical laughter when he's nervous, this happening when Ben gets nails in his leg from Ferry's attack on The Work Bench.
  • Monster of the Week: Arthur Ferry. In life, he was an energy trader that stole power and sold it to foreign countries for profit. After he died, he would spend his time in Hell being zapped with electricity. After escaping, he receives Shock and Awe powers and starts absorbing electricity and releasing it as precision lightning strikes, killing individuals and destroying property that in someway is trying to repress his philanthropic accomplishments.
  • Never My Fault: Arthur insists that what he's doing is justice for all the good he did in life being wrongfully suppressed, but Sam points out that they're doing it because of his crimes.
