Part 6: Trixie’s Discording

CHAPTER TITLE: Who?

EPISODE TITLE: ...Who?

Trixie’s story starts with her telling where she is in life: ostracized and laughed off every stage she performs on, thanks to being shown up by Twilight Sparkle in Ponyville, during the ‘Ursa Major’ incident. Something is forcing her to remember her past.

She recalls being disgruntled and unsatisfied with herself from a very early age. It is revealed she has four other sisters — Lexy, Pixie, Mixie, and Nyxie — but resents them, (Trixie has severe Middle Child Syndrome.) She was accepted a prestigious magic school that none of her other sisters attended, but could not stand being an unremarkable student getting average grades. School counseling did not help. Eventually, Trixie is inspired by a flashy old magician pony who serves as a substitute teacher, and develops her ‘anything you can do, I can do better’ routine, in order to become the center of attention. The problem was: once the spotlight shut off, it never stuck.

In the present, Trixie thanks her listener for hearing her story. Though he doesn’t reveal his name to her, it is painfully obvious that the listener is none other than Discord, himself. He has even gone so far as to transform himself into a giant version of Trixie’s cutie mark, (just as he had done with most of the Elements of Harmony, while discording them.) Discord gives Trixie several scrolls, promising that any one of them will be ‘the grandest display of magic’ imaginable. She reads them all eagerly.

Then Trixie suddenly finds herself in bed. A pony is shaking her awake, insisting she’s ‘on in twenty seconds!‘ Trixie’s confused; she hasn’t had any shows arranged in months, but accepts it as yet another gift from her mysterious benefactor. Trixie goes on stage. Not an empty seat in the house. As Discord promised, Trixie performs the most super-spectacular show in her life! But her audience’s reaction is... utter indifference. As though it were the theatrical equivalent of drinking a cup of tepid water. The audience proceeds to leave, ignoring her utterly.

Trixie is outraged. She catches up with two audience members, who just tell her, apathetically, that ‘show magic is nothing special.’

Next, Discord appears, mocking her. Trixie demands to know what went wrong; Discord suggests that Trixie is simply too average to the point that she’s become invisible! Indeed, when Trixie runs away from Discord, ponies carelessly bump into her as though she WERE invisible, not even stopping to apologize. Filled with despair, Trixie decides that showbiz, magic, and trying to connect with others at all is completely worthless. ‘Why do I keep entertaining people who forget my name five minutes later?’

Later on, somewhere in the town of Hoofington, Trixie is discovered by her sister, Nyxie. Though Nyxie screams in her face, nothing she or anyone can do triggers a reaction from Trixie - she’s gone completely catatonic. Discord watches this all overheard, triumphantly. He gloats that Trixie was actually *another* Element of Magic... but the LESSER one. And having practiced on Trixie, he now he knows how to crush Twilight Sparkle’s heart.

Unlike the other ponies, Trixie doesn’t really get a new name after her discording... unless you count ‘The Pathetic and Irrelevant Trixie.’

Tropes

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Trixie, who is the only pony other than the mane six to get a a chapter in the original Discorded Ponies (though several others have gotten them in Loose Canon by other authors).
  • Alone in a Crowd: How Trixie is broken by Discord, which he did as a warmup for breaking Twilight.
  • Broken Bird: Trixie.
  • Dramatic Irony: The readers will quickly see that Discord is the one Trixie has encountered, but she doesn't even know he's free yet.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: While the other seasons would detail noncanon events, this and the Season Finale are the only ones to detail completely noncanon situations.
