• Blinded by the Light: Gardenia's Roserade is able to use Flash to do this to Aipom. While Roserade does avoid Aipom's Focus Punches, Aipom can still hear, which results in Roserade getting a Fire-type Weather Ball to the face.
• Call-Back: The second Staravia sees Gardenia's Turtwig, he remembers losing to it in their last battle and he is PISSED.
• Foreshadowing: Aipom's entrance and method of beating Roserade (surrounding Roserade with Swift stars and then Focus Punching the stars into Roserade) foreshadow Throwing the Track Switch!
• Gameplay and Story Segregation: Ash's Turtwig is affected by Leech Seed's Life Drain in spite of the fact that Grass-types are immune to the effect in the video games.
• Hoist by His Own Petard: Roserade winds up getting struck by it's own Weather Ball when Aipom uses Focus Punch on the attack.
• Power of the Sun: The bright sunlight turns Weather Ball into a Fire-type move.
  • Cherubi also uses its Chlorophyll ability to dodge attacks swiftly and fire off Solar Beams without having to charge.
• Smug Smiler: Roserade when it's dodging a temporarily-blinded Aipom's Focus Punches
