John McNeil, a Glasgow teenager, is about to participate as in the Orange Walk as the mace-swinger leading the Muirhill Flute Band. Over the course of the day, as he sees the drunkenness and violence that the parade brings out in people, he starts to become disillusioned with the Orange Order and the ideology it promotes.
Provides examples of:
- Ambiguous Ending: It's unclear if John remains in the Order. The credits play out over a montage of him tossing the mace into a blue sky, which would seem to suggest that he stays.
- Extremely Short Timespan: All the action takes place on a single Saturday.
- Friend to All Children: We see John good-naturedly horsing around with his younger siblings before he goes out on the march, and it's seeing the Order members show no regard for the children who get caught in the fray in Duncan Street that starts off his disillusionment.
- National Anthem: The band wrap things up at the end of the day by playing "God Save the Queen".
- Stop Being Stereotypical: John and one of his pals go into a pub where they see an Orangeman from another lodge pilfering bottles from the pub gantry while the barman isn't looking and lament that it's men like him who give the Order a bad name.
