Recap / Paperman

Go To

Georgenote , a dissatisfied and lonely office worker in an unnamed mid-twentieth century American city, is waiting at a train station for his commute to work when he notices Megnote , also waiting for a train, chasing after a sheet of paper which has blown away from her. The two appear rather smitten with each other, and have a brief bonding moment after another of the papers George is carrying is blown into Meg's face by a gust of wind, leaving a red lipstick impression. But the moment is quickly ended when Meg must rush for her train, leaving George alone and depressed once more.

At work, George is given a large amount of paperwork to complete by his cold, intimidating boss. Eager for distraction, he glances out of his window to the building opposite the street — and is amazed to see Meg in the window right opposite his, apparently interviewing for a job. After his initial attempts to attract her attention fail, George hits on the idea of using his paperwork to craft paper planes to throw across the street to try and communicate with her. But each time he throws a plane, it either fails to reach its target or something intervenes — a worker in another office who accidentally receives it, a bird that happens to fly in its path, or Meg herself moving out of her chair at a critical moment — to prevent Meg from reaching it.

Finally, George runs out of paper — except for the sheet with Meg's lipstick imprint on it. Resigning himself to his last chance to contact her, he makes a final paper plane to throw... but a gust of wind blows it out of his hand and away before he can. Meg leaves her appointment, but before George can leave to try and intercept her his boss, unimpressed with George's plane-making, brings him a new stack of paperwork to complete. Finally reaching his breaking point, George runs out of the office to try and catch Meg. But he reaches the street too late, and Meg has gone. In a fit of anger George grabs the plane with Meg's lipstick imprint, which has landed on a mailbox across the street, and throws it as far as he can before storming off.

The lipstick plane eventually floats in a nearby alleyway, which is also full of other paper planes that failed to reach their target, and lands on the ground... but after a few seconds it begins to move again, apparently of its own volition. It begins to transfer its power to the other planes, which also begin to fly under their own power, and together the paper planes fly after George when he walks past the alley. Sulking and miserable, George fails to notice the odd behaviour of the planes until it is too late, and they begin to overpower and force him towards a nearby train station and onto a train. The lipstick plane breaks away from the others and seeks out Meg, finding her at a flower stand across town. After it catches her attention, the lipstick plane lures Meg onto another train. The two trains arrive simultaneously at the station where Meg and George originally met, at which point the paper planes lose their power. Finally meeting each other, the short ends with George and Meg having coffee, discussing their adventures, and beginning to flirt.
