Tropes in this episode:

  • Character Development:
    • Following on from their extended interaction and misadventure last episode, Sanson's become protective of Marie. This will continue from hereon out.
    • Nemo. The Nautilus Chief Engineer even invokes it in-universe, noting he's changed since Nadia, Jean, and the others came board.
  • Compensating for Something: Hanson accuses Sanson of bringing a rifle along because he feels 'inadequate'.
  • Everyone Has Standards: The Chief Engineer feels Nemo made the right call going to Reef 64 rather than pursuing the Garfish. He wants to see Gargoyle defeated as much as anyone else on board. But he feels that if that victory comes at the cost of innocent lives like the ill Marie and Nadia, then the Nautilus crew would be no different than the Neo-Atlanteans.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Electra's dissent and anger at Nemo abandoning a chance to get Gargoyle. This will gradually keep building and finally come to a head by Episode 22.
      • There's also Electra's silence when the Chief Engineer is reminding her Nemo saved all of them and he is worthy of their trust. Her silent conflict isn't for the reasons he thinks and will be clearer after Episode 22.
    • Nemo's knowledge of prehistoric species and oceanography, which far surpasses both fields' late 19th Century knowledge and capabilities. It shows he's educated, but it's also another clue of his Atlantean heritage and his own access to the cumulative knowledge of Atlantis.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Nadia's attempts to refuse to accept or acknowledge that Nemo was justified in shooting the Neo-Atlanean soldier at the end of the previous episode. Jean's all but pulling his hair out trying to follow Nadia's train of 'logic'.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Both Electra and Nemo. Electra openly dissents and questions Nemo's orders for the first time in the series. Nemo abandons a possible chance to get Gargoyle in order to save Nadia and Marie. The Chief Engineer even remarks in-story on how Nemo's changed since the Grandis Gang and the children came aboard.
  • Suicidal Pacifism: Nadia told Jean she would have preferred to die rather than watching Nemo shoot the Neo-Atlantean soldier threatening her.
  • Wham Line: Nemo ordering the crew to abandon the pursuit of the Garfish and to proceed to Reef 64 is an in-universe one. The entire bridge crew is shocked.
