Recap / My Hero Academia S1E7 "Deku vs. Kacchan"

Go To

Izuku is up against Katsuki in their first class with All Might! Can he and Uraraka beat the villain team of Katsuki and Tenya before time runs out?

Tropes:

  • Chewing the Scenery: With Tenya acting the villain, complete with a hammy monologue, Ochaco can't help but laugh.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: A flashback shows Katsuki as absolutely furious when Izuku was concerned about him hurting himself as a child, and the main reason why he begins to bully him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: All Might reminds Bakugo that even real villains aren't so reckless as to destroy their own base.
  • Instant-Win Condition: In order to win, a member of the "hero" team has to simply touch the "bomb". Katsuki completely forgets about this in his laser focus on beating Izuku, which is why he loses.
  • Loophole Abuse: All Might warns that he would be forced to cancel the exercise if things get too violent. Katsuki knows he can't kill Izuku, but he can hurt or incapacitate him, and as long as the "nerd" dodges, he can still go all out.
  • Oh, Crap!: Uraraka, when she realizes Tenya has prepared for her by emptying the room of anything she might use her powers upon.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Discussed in-universe; with Katsuki as the "villain" using his powers so aggressively that Izuku the "hero" is actually in danger, All Might believes that he really should stop the exercise... but doesn't because he knows how important the fight is for Izuku... so he compromises by declaring that Katsuki damaging the structure he's supposed to be protecting is foolish for a hero or for a villain, and he'll be disqualified if he uses an attack that powerful again.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Katsuki has completely forgotten the mission in the name of kicking the crap out of Izuku.
  • Take the Third Option: Isuku can't beat Katsuki head-on and refuses to lose to his team. He instead works with Ochaco to win the exercise by helping her reach the "bomb" while Tenya is protecting it.
  • That Man Is Dead: Izuku vows that he's no longer going to be the "Deku" Katsuki picks on since childhood. Thanks to Uraraka, he plans to redefine "Deku" into a hero-worthy name.note
  • Worthy Opponent: Izuku clarifies that he wants to beat Katsuki not because he looks down at him, but because he respects him.
