Tropes:

  • Fallen Hero: Brent Renwyck is a former senator who worked hard for his constituents without ever trying to enrich himself while he was in office. However, since exiting politics, he has reluctantly started stealing from his wife and doing business with gangsters.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Jim Nash is murdered for investigating organized crime and his workmate Tom and intern Cynthia continue his work in spite of knowing they face the same risks he did, with Tom even calling himself Jim‘s ghost during a Badass Boast.
  • Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe: Priscilla, the daughter of the former Broussard governess, has a daughter who the late Arthur Broussard put through college, and her mother later claims he was the father. It turns out that Priscilla‘s real father is the former family chauffeur.
  • Pursued Protagonist: The episode opens with the first Victim of the Week being chased through the swamps outside New Orleans. He is killed with a blow from a machete after turning around to go around a snake.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Cynthia Broussard is dating the reporter who is writing an expose on her stepfather, although this has little impact on the plot beyond her mother talking negatively about his boyfriend outside his presence.
