Tropes:

  • Creepy Crossdresser: When the undertaker brings what are allegedly Murdoch Foyle's ashes to the police station, he is still under the impression that the person who brought the stiff for him to burn was Murdoch Foyle's mother. As Hugh and Dot soon find out once he leaves them with the ashes, it was actually the other way around.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Arthur insists he watched Murdoch Foyle, or "the Woodcutter", kill Marigold. Jack and Aunt Prudence dismiss this as him just associating Janey's death with Marigold's, but Phryne believes he's telling the truth. She turns out to be right.
  • Sweet Tooth: One of Phryne's cousin Arthur's childish mannerisms is his fondness for candy apples.
  • Unsuspectingly Soused: Mr. Butler is tempted by a case of "special" fudge, not knowing the secret ingredient is hashish. He overindulges and ends up prancing half-naked in the fountain.
