Col. Potter gets a visit from his son-in-law, Bobby (Dennis Dugan), but gets some unpleasant news about him. Winchester keeps up B.J., Hawkeye, and eventually the entire camp with his snoring.
Attention all personnel! This episode contains the following tropes:
- Actually Pretty Funny: When Col. Potter is telling Margaret about Bobby coming to town, Margaret starts laughing, which Col. Potter is upset about, until she clarifies she was laughing about the idea of Winchester snoring, at which point Col. Potter starts laughing as well.
- Artistic License – Religion: Fr. Mulcahy notes that the Seventh Commandment is taking a beating. As a Catholic, he should have said the Sixth Commandment, as Catholic and Protestant versions of the Ten Commandments differ note .
- Both Sides Have a Point: When Col. Potter, angry about the news that his son-in-law was cheating on his daughter, tells Father Mulcahy he should preach about adultery in his next sermon, Father Mulcahy points out the seventh commandment has regularly taken a beating in camp, and he wouldn't feel comfortable preaching about it. Col. Potter, in turn, points out this isn't a case of a lonely soldier (or doctor or nurse) missing their significant other having a one-night stand (something he implies he'd be understanding about), but a civilian traveling on business who has only been away from home for a few weeks.
- Continuity Snarl: When Winchester and Father Mulcahy argue about Winchester's snoring, Winchester tells him he'll never go to Father Mulcahy about a personal problem again, to which Father Mulcahy retorts he's still waiting for the first time. Winchester did go to Father Mulcahy about a personal problem in "Morale Victory".
- Hypocrisy Nod: Potter is righteously pissed about his daughter (the mother of his beloved grandson, no less) being betrayed by her husband. He calms down substantially when actually talking to her, and he later confides in Bobby his own one-time affair and the sheer guilt he felt for it. He can certainly still be upset about this situation, but he acknowledges how he's really in no position to be the one to run his mouth and potentially break-up a family.
- Hypocrite:
- Though sympathetic to Potter and his daughter, Mulcahy argues against a sermon explicitly condemning adultery for this reason. He's turned a blind eye to other examples for his entire tenure, so he feels to start lecturing now over this one specific incident would make himself look bad and be unfair to those he looked the other way on in the past.
- In his rant to Mulcahy about how situations are different, Potter implies he could understand a lonely soldier far from home cheating on a spouse, but this specific case involves his daughter being cheated on, so he feels little reason to feel understanding at the moment.
- Loud Sleeper Gag: The B-plot of the episode involves Winchester denying the fact that he snores loudly (because of his allergies), even when B.J. and Hawkeye record him doing so. Eventually, when the rest of the camp can hear him (thanks to the microphone B.J. and Hawkeye planted under his bed), Winchester reluctantly agrees to move to another tent (though not, he insists, because he believes B.J. and Hawkeye).
- My God, What Have I Done?: When talking to Bobby about his own affair, Potter mentions the sheer guilt he felt and how he couldn't even look Mildred in the eye for a week. Bobby admits he's been struggling similarly.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Col. Potter admits to Bobby that he was unfaithful to Mildred one time, which makes Bobby come clean about his own indiscretion.
- Not So Similar: When Mulcahy says adultery is actually quite common in the 4077 alone, Potter retorts there's a big difference between someone who's been stuck in a warzone for months and a traveling salesman that's only been out and about for mere days.
- Sympathetic Adulterer: Mulcahy reminds Potter that the Pay Cheating Unto Absence is just a fact of life in the camp, something even certain members of the main cast over the years could vouch for.
- Talking in Your Sleep: In The Tag, B.J. starts talking in his sleep (about Winchester's snoring), waking up both Hawkeye and Winchester.
- Traveling Salesman: This is what Bobby does for a living, selling novelties.
