Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Aesop Amnesia and Here We Go Again!: For once with Mrs. Oleson, both are averted after she declines the bearded man's offer to start a fried chicken restaurant in Walnut Grove.
  • It Will Never Catch On: In the final scene, a bearded man dressed in a white, southern suit makes a proposition to Mrs. Oleson: Why don't you open a restaurant that serves only southern fried chicken? Mrs. Oleson laughs at the idea, tells him no thanks and sends him on his way; Nels, who has overheard the conversation, also laughs when his wife tells him the absurdity of the idea as they go back inside the hotel. As fans came to know, the bearded man is an obvious allusion to the real-life Colonel Sanders, who just 70 years later would start his own fast food chicken franchise with that unique special recipe of 11 herbs and spices that was "finger lickin' good."
  • Retroactive Recognition: Guest star Laurie Main (Major Guffey) would go on to become the host/narrator of Welcome to Pooh Corner, one of the Disney Channel's initial launch series.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Harvey House: The pioneering chain of railroad-station eating houses, located mainly along the west coast. This was the template for the Mrs. Sullivan's restaurant franchise that Mrs. Oleson is drawn into.
    • Kentucky Fried Chicken: The "bearded man" in the final scene, pitching his idea for a fried chicken restaurant.
