The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit
The game opens with Christopher Eriksen in his room (like any good DONTNOD protagonist) playing with his toys on a Saturday morning (roughly a month after the incident which caused Sean and Daniel to flee from Seattle in the main game). His games and artwork all centre around his superhero persona, Captain Spirit, who must protect the innocent from the evil Mantroid and his minions. His father, Charles, calls him to breakfast, getting increasingly angry if the player chooses to keep looking around his room.At the breakfast table, he and his father discuss Chris's (now deceased) mother Emily, as Chris eats a breakfast, and his dad enjoys multiple beers before none too subtly taking a bottle of another spirit to drink while he watches a basketball game. He promises Chris that after the game, they'll get a Christmas tree. A newspaper article alludes to the events of the main game, indicating that this is set the following month, at some point in November.
Tasks Chris can complete (in any order) include:
- Gathering the parts of his costume from around the house.
- Defeating the "Water Eater" (AKA fixing the boiler).
- Recovering a treasure hidden in the back yard (which turns out to be photos of his mum).
- Travel to Mantroid's home planet, only to discover he can't be defeated; he's his way of representing the car accident which killed his mum.
The game ends, when, after enough events have been completed, Chris's dad passes out drunk. On being woken, he stumbles and falls over, catching the attention of their neighbour (who, depending on the player's actions shows a great deal of concern for Chris's safety). On getting her to leave, Chris's dad goes on a drunken rant, accusing him of being responsible for his mother's death. He tries to backtrack, but Chris knows he meant it, and runs into the yard. Climbing the ladder to his treehouse, a rung breaks. Before he hits the ground, Chris suddenly begins floating, and lands safely. He gets up and sees Sean and Daniel, the protagonists of Life Is Strange 2 proper, nearby.
Tropes featured in The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit:
- Bait-and-Switch: The opening moments of the game strongly imply that Chris has actual powers, before revealing that he's just pretending.
- Game Within a Game: A Hot Dawg Man licenced game can be played on Chris's dad's phone, if the player can unlock it.
- I Coulda Been a Contender!: Charles was a basketball player at one point, but his career was derailed at some point.
- Line-of-Sight Name: Mantroid turns out to be a portmanteau of the streets which intersected to form the crossroad Chris's mum had her fatal accident at.
- Transformation Sequence: Chris gets one when he assembles all of the parts of his Captain Spirit costume.
