Nuns in charge of a day care facility find the body of a young heroin addict in the yard. Because of her expensive clothes and dentistry, the detectives must investigate who would dump her body and why. The deceased, Katy Blanchard, was estranged from her wealthy family due to her addiction. The Blanchards wanted nothing to do with her so their business manager, Jerome Kamen, was helping Katy. When she recently got pregnant, Kamen paid for an abortion and then let her stay in a client's empty apartment. He denies being present when she died. With evidence that Katy was alive in Kamen's car while overdosing, he is charged with manslaughter.
The defence gets the evidence from the car excluded and the charges dismissed. Kincaid and McCoy discover that Katy was blackmailing Kamen after learning that he'd embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from the trust funds of the Blanchards' three children. Kamen is charged with larceny until the DA's office can support a murder charge. But when McCoy and Kincaid learn that Katy's brother Matthew was with her on the night of his death, he's forced to admit they took heroin together. She began to overdose, and he called Kamen, who promised to "take care" of Katy. The charges are increased to murder.
The defence alleges in court that Kamen is the only person who tried to help Katy, whereas Matthew had motive to let her die so he wouldn't be expelled from Yale for drug use. McCoy brings up the forensic evidence from Kamen's car, which cannot be presented to the jury but can be mentioned to establish Kamen's credibility. McCoy attempts to discuss a plea deal with Kamen and his lawyer. Kamen says that letting Katy die was kinder to her since she'd repeatedly tried and failed to get clean. He rants about how he has thanklessly worked for the Blanchards for decades and they did not appreciate him, so he feels entitled to their money. His lawyer accepts the deal.
