Munch gets the case of a woman who died in bed. He thinks her husband killed her, but Dr. Cox tells him according to the medical exam she conducted, there was no way she was murdered. Kellerman finds his bribe charges have made the front page, and in a rage, Kellerman goes to Roland's office and attacks him, until he finds out Roland is a federal witness. Barnfather wants to suspend him, but U.S. Attorney Gale Ingram (Rebecca Boyd) agrees to let Kellerman stay on administrative duty if he agrees to take a polygraph. Kellerman does so, and passes, but so does Roland. Pembleton convinces Bayliss to revisit an old case, but while Bayliss gets a suspect, he's unable to close the case, and Pembleton tries to confront his demons regarding the box. Elsewhere, Howard offers to let Brodie stay with her, but Brodie refuses because he doesn't want to ruin Howard's reputation with the others.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Flashback: Near the end of the episode, Pembleton remembers several times he was in the box, and we see brief clips of them.
  • Good News, Bad News: Ingram doesn't say the phrase, but she does give Kellerman good news and bad news - he passed the polygraph, but so did Roland, which means one of them was lying.
  • Guilt Complex: The husband feels it's all his fault his wife died of a heroin overdose because he knew his wife did drugs but did nothing to stop it, which is why he confessed to murder.
  • Lie Detector: Kellerman agrees to take a polygraph if it'll mean he doesn't get suspended.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Pembleton tells Bayliss he blew it when interrogating the suspect by getting sidetracked by the idea the suspect should have fled to California.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Kellerman tries to deliver one of these to Roland, but stops when he hears he's on the phone with Ingram.
