- Disability as an Excuse for Jerkassery: Ever since that truck accident, Aulani has been filled with bitterness and self-pity.
- Entitled Bastard: Aulani expects Danny to do things for her, even though she hardly appreciates him for doing so.
- Heel Realization: After learning that Danny has AIDS, Aulani finally stops feeling sorry for herself and reciprocates her love for Danny.
- Nice Guy: Not once has Danny ever complained or even taken offense to Aulani's lack of gratitude and inability to accept that the reason why he took care of her for all these years, running errands and paying the bills is because he loves her.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: This is why Danny has been taking care of Aulani and working hard for all these years.
- Kick the Dog: After his doctor told him that he has AIDS; Danny comes home, only to be berated by Aulani. After telling him that she "feels sorry for him", Jonathan and Mark leave the room in disgust.
- Psychological Projection: Aulani is so blinded by her own self-pity that she believes that the only reason why Danny looks after her is because he feels sorry for her. Jonathan points out how wrong she is.
