Recap / Hell Girl S 3 E 14 The Street Corner Of Bitterness

Go To

Convenience store worker Tsuzuki Kinya offers to take care of Kashiwagi Hidemi (who Yuzuki briefly sees at the end of the last episode) after she misses the last train home. As they are walking together, someone takes a picture of them and posts it online. Because Tsuzuki looks like a delinquent, the people around Kashiwagi become suspicious. Kashiwagi will send the person who uploaded the picture to Hell for giving her a bad reputation. Yuzuki can now sense people who are about to contact Ai, and seeks out Kashiwagi to try to persuade her to stop her revenge. Kashiwagi and Yuzuki try to locate Tsuzuki's store only to find that he has been arrested for assault. Kashiwagi types in Tsuzuki's name on the Hell Correspondence with her mobile phone instead, since his assault charge may land in the newspapers. Tsuzuki breaks out of jail with a gun and takes Yuzuki hostage. Kashiwagi tells him to stop hoping he will recognize her, but he doesn't at first. Saddened, she pulls the string. The next day, Kashiwagi is seen afterward wearing excessive jewelry, makeup, and tattoos. Yuzuki's resolve to stop vengeful people wavers as she senses many people about to contact the Hell Link.

This episode contains examples of:

  • The Ace: Hidemi was this before rumors about her being a delinquent began to spread.
  • Deconstruction: Of the "Serious, smart girl letting her hair down after meeting a Street Smart, lawless boy" plot. Despite it seeming like Kinya and Hidemi had a genuine connection after their first meeting, the consequences of these interactions came out fairly quickly; not only does befriending the delinquent Kinya ruin Hidemi's reputation as soon as word about it gets out, but he also doesn't care about her enough to remember her after their initial interactions. Kinya also ends up being a massive Jerkass, beating down the homeless that showed him kindness earlier solely because he believed that he had more money than he let on, bragging about being arrested, and then holding an innocent teenage girl at gunpoint before turning his gun on Hidemi.
  • Downer Ending: Kinya remembers Hidemi too late, and she cries as she sends him to Hell, her spirit broken. The next time Yuzuki sees her, Hidemi's entire appearance has changed to match her tarnished public image. Yuzuki begins to hear chimes from multiple people, signaling that many people are going to contact the Hell Correspondence.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Hidemi sends Kinya to Hell when he remembers her too late.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Ai is openly disapproving of Kinya's flagrant misuse of kindness in hopes of being rewarded.
  • Gyaru Girl: What Hidemi resembles after her transformation.
  • Jerkass: Kinya turns out to be one, as he beats the homeless man he befriended after finding out that he supposedly has a lot of money, holds Yuzuki hostage with a gun, and then almost guns down Hidemi because he doesn't recognize her. Hidemi sends him to Hell for the last thing.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Despite the setup implying that he was a nice guy running with the wrong crowd, the end of the episode reveals that Kinya is just as bad as the gang of men that beat him up in the beginning.
  • Malicious Slander: An unknown person takes a picture of Hidemi and Kinya walking to the train station together and posts it on a forum that paints Hidemi out to be a delinquent that hangs out with those kinds of men, causing her reputation to spiral.
