Recap / Half Life 2 A Red Letter Day

Go To

"That's right, Barney. This is a red letter day."
— Dr. Isaac Kleiner

Gordon and Alyx enter the lab, where Kleiner is waiting. Barney arrives at the lab and is instructed by Kleiner to give Gordon the Mark V HEV Suit. Before he can though, Kleiner's pet head crab Lamarr suddenly jumps out at him and scurries into the vents. It seems Gordon arrived on the right day, as the team is scheduled to initialize a new teleport to Eli Vance's lab in Black Mesa East. Alyx is teleported successfully to her father's lab, and Gordon enters to follow her. Unfortunately, Lamarr falls out of a nearby vent as the teleport is beginning, knocking its primary emitter out of alignment and causing it to malfunction. This causes Gordon to inadvertently teleport to a variety of places, including Wallace Breen's office in the Citadel. This alerts Breen to Gordon's presence, and he immediately notifies his superiors and mobilizes City 17's Civil Protection forces to seek him out. Gordon is forced to flee the lab and travel to Black Mesa East on foot, but not before being given his trusty crowbar by Barney. He rushes through the nearby train yard and past squads of approaching officers and descends into an underground hall.

This Chapter contains examples of:

  • Exposition Break: Most of the chapter is one of these. It serves to introduce some more of Gordon's old colleagues, establish that the Resistance have been setting up a teleporter network as a faster means of getting refugees out of City 17, and give Gordon a chance to finally put on his HEV Suit.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Because of Kleiner's pet headcrab Lamarr messing with his teleporter just as Gordon is about to go through, Gordon inadvertently teleports in and out of Breen's office, alerting him to the return of the Resistance's long-sought savior. This causes him to put the entirety of City 17 on high alert, which leads to Civil Protection raiding camps all along the Resistance's Underground Railroad and executing rebels en masse. And with Kleiner's teleporter out of commission, Gordon has to hoof it all the way to Black Mesa East by foot, dodging Metrocops the whole way.
  • Right Under Their Noses: Worthy of note is how Kleiner's lab is a mere few blocks away from an extremely busy train station used by the Combine to constantly relocate citizens.
  • Teleportation Misfire: Kleiner's teleporter malfunctions after Lamarr knocks the main emitter out of alignment, causing Gordon to teleport to completely random locations until it's shut down.
