Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 6 E 3 Grandmas Boys

Go To

After seeing Marvin blissfully enter retirement, Grandma Huang decides it's her turn to retire from something; when Louis fails to celebrate her as she wanted, it will take a visit from Hurricane Gene - and maybe a hot tub - to make things right.

  • Blackmail: It turns out Marvin has learned various secrets of the Huang boys while they were under dental anesthesia (namely their secret trip to Georgia), and the boys seek to get some damaging material on him in return. They eventually do learn (from Marvin himself) that the expensive boat Marvin was "gifted" at his retirement party was actually one he bought years ago and had kept secret from Honey until he could justify owning it.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When the new and more mature Gene visits, he quickly learns that Louis is frustrated over Grandma wanting him to buy her a hot tub instead of accepting how good she already has it. So, Gene has a talk with her that leads to her expressing her appreciation...and as a reward, Gene buys her the hot tub himself, missing the point that Grandma needed to appreciate everything the family already does for her without constant bribery.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Louis invites the wild and annoying brother Gene to visit in order to show Grandma how good her life is in comparison. However, when Gene arrives, it turns out he recently had a near-death experience and wants to be more mature, which he shows by buying Grandma the hot tub himself. This leads to Louis becoming frustrated and admitting to Gene how untrustworthy he is even when he's trying to improve himself, causing a rift in the family.
  • It's All About Me: Jenny wants her own retirement party and a hot tub after Marvin gets one at his celebration, despite not currently (and likely not ever) being employed. Even though Louis does arrange a party for her, she's completely unsatisfied without getting the hot tub too. This frustrates Louis, not only because a hot tub would be expensive and hard to maintain, but also because Grandma has never thanked him in the past for all of the kindness he's given her.
  • Offscreen Breakup: When Louis apologizes to Gene for his earlier behavior, Gene admits that his change in attitude was not only due to falling into a tiger pit at the zoo and having a near-death experience; it's also because his wife left him two years ago, which he was too ashamed to admit to anyone before then.
  • The Roast: Eddie, Evan, and Emery try to contact one of Marvin's old navy friends for Blackmail material, with the excuse that they're planning one of these to celebrate Marvin's retirement. However, the only stories the friend has are either classified or too raunchy to share.
  • Too Good to Be True: By the episode's midpoint, Gene wants to be more responsible, Gene has convinced Grandma to express her appreciation more, and Gene has not only paid for the hot tub in full but also offered to regularly pay for maintenance. However, Louis is convinced it's this, and Gene will inevitably screw up and foot him with the bill. By the episode's end, however, things are still just as good as they appeared, and Louis apologizes to his brother.
  • You Just Told Me: When the kids are unable to get any damaging stories on Marvin, they tell him that his ex-wife said hello, and Marvin asks if they learned about Angela through her. They didn't, but now they know that Marvin's got a secret, which he admits is a boat he christened Angela.
