Recap / Fresh Off The Boat S 4 E 3 Kids

Go To

When Louis and Jessica realize Eddie is finally mature enough to be left on his own, they make plans to spend more time with friends, only to learn their friends plan on having a baby.

  • Disproportionate Retribution: In The Tag, after Louis asks Jessica if they should find out which one of their kids ruined their good couch just two days after taking it out of storage, Jessica is upset enough that she decides she'll ground all of them, guilty or not.
  • Double-Meaning Title: In addition to Marvin and Honey getting into an argument over whether or not to undo Marvin's vasectomy and have kids, Alison treats Evan like a kid whose parents are divorced after she and Eddie break up and her own friendship with Evan is no longer sustainable.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: In the opening, Louis and Jessica are excited when Eddie manages to pour himself a full glass and bring it to the living room without spilling a drop, even remembering to use a coaster, and decide to finally take out their "good" couch that's been in storage for fifteen years. At the episode's end, Evan purposely makes a huge stain on it after getting fed up with Eddie and Alison breaking up, while staring them in the eyes and saying "Look what you did"; furthermore, The Tag reveals that the cushion with the ice cream stain had already been flipped over in the past when Jessica was pregnant with Eddie and her water broke, so there's no saving it.
  • Fake Relationship: Eddie and Alison are both worried about what Evan's reaction will be upon learning that they've broken up, as Evan liked Alison, so they pretend to keep dating for a day while taking Evan out for ice cream and other fun activities. When they decide that Evan's mood is happy enough to handle the truth and they admit they faked still being together for his sake, his reaction is still just as discomforting as they had imagined.
  • The Jinx: Emery's bad luck for the year once again comes up, as Grandma uses him as her "good luck charm" by having him try to pick up and accidentally break various tchotchkes she was gifted that she thinks are ugly, and having him stand behind her opponents at her Mahjong parlor and jinxing them. Grandma attempts to lighten Emery's mood by stating that having good or bad luck doesn't matter as much as how you make use of it.
  • No Listening Skills: Eddie is weirded out by seeing Alison at his house hanging out with Evan after they broke up in the previous episode, as he never paid attention to the two of them forming a friendship. In the following conversation with Alison, who compares Evan being forced to choose which one of them to side with to a child of divorce and says she can relate, she's exasperated that Eddie doesn't remember the numerous times she's talked about her parents being divorced in the past...as well as exasperated that, when Eddie asks if she celebrates two Christmases, he also never remembered her talking about being Jewish. Later, Alison takes Evan to a pony ride attraction to make him happy before breaking the news about splitting up with Eddie, and when Eddie asks how she knew about the place, she pulls out a photograph of Eddie taking her there on their second date.
  • The Unblinking: When Evan purposely ruins the couch while staring at Eddie and Alison and blaming them for the mess he's making, Alison comments that Evan hasn't blinked since they told him about the break-up.
  • Why We Can't Have Nice Things: In The Tag, Louis says this verbatim when he and Jessica see that the couch they paid to keep in storage for 15 years was stained within two days of taking it back out.
