Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Mental illness is a real and serious problem to deal with, especially among family members. If someone in your family displays signs of mental illness, it is important that you get them psychiatric help immediately.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Tiffany and her sister Erika are concerned about their little brother Bryan's mental health, although it takes Tiffany a while to accept that Bryan has a mental illness and needs psychiatric help. When Bryan has a mental breakdown at his old job, they are able to intervene and calm him down before the police get involved. At the episode's end, Tiffany and Erika decide to check Bryan into psychiatric care so he can get the help he needs.
  • Bittersweet Ending: After Tiffany and Erika convince Bryan to take a psychiatric evaluation, the episode ends with the three siblings sharing a tearful hug and walking out their apartment together so he could get the help he needs for his mental issues.
  • Cooldown Hug: Twice, Tiffany has to give these to Bryan to calm him down.
  • Oh, Crap!: Tiffany is horrified to find Bryan having a mental breakdown at his old job, threatening his manager and drawing the attention of NYPD officers who are ready to tase him. Fortunately, Tiffany is able to calm her brother down and convince the NYPD officers to let him go.
  • Therapy Is for the Weak: Subverted. Tiffany is initially in denial that her brother Bryan needs psychiatric help, thinking that he is just being an emotionally-immature younger sibling acting out. But after Bryan has a mental breakdown and Scola gives Tiffany a pep talk on the need to address mental illness, she and her sister Erika decide to check their brother into psychiatric care so he can get the help he needs.
  • Very Special Episode: This episode illustrates the challenges of dealing with mental illness among family members and the need to address it. It ends with providing the contact information for both the Crisis Text Line 24/7 and Veterans Crisis Line for anyone who needs help.
