Recap / Diagnosis: Murder S4E17 "Delusions Of Murder"

Go To

Thought Dr. Wexler was a bad guy? You ain't seen nothing yet...

Psychiatrist Gavin Reed is having himself some troubles with his soon-to-be ex-wife Claire over him sleeping with other women. That would be bad enough, but what makes it worse is that not only are these women patients of his, they've also been sleeping with him against their will via hypnosis. Claire threatens to release this fact to the world if Gavin doesn't give her everything she wants. With the help of his latest patient/victim, he plans to alleviate this issue.

"Delusions of Murder" displays symptoms of the following tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: Claire, as she covered for Gavin's abuse of another patient in the past, and was blackmailing him over it instead of reporting him and giving his victims justice.
  • Blackmail Backfire: Claire gives Gavin two choices: One where he gives her all she wants in their divorce, and one where she reveals his sexual abuse of his patients. Gavin chooses the choice in which Claire dies.
  • Frame-Up: Dr. Reed plans to frame his patient for the murder.
  • In the Back: Claire's time is up with Gavin after he stabs her in the back with a kitchen knife.
  • Psycho Psychologist:
    • Sexually abusing patients, committing murder, framing one of his abused patients for said murder. It's pretty freaking clear Gavin ticks a lot of boxes.
    • Claire is a more downplayed example, as she is a therapist herself, and as stated above, perfectly willing to cover up Gavin's abuse and only expose it for her own gain.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: A crime rarely seen on Diagnosis: Murder, and yet that's just what Gavin Reed does to his patients.
  • Recorded Audio Alibi: Gavin Reed creates himself an alibi by playing a recording of an earlier session with his patient.
