Recap / Diagnosis Murder S 2 E 14 Call Me Incontestable

Go To

When Mark goes to collect a friend/patient for a celebratory dinner, he and Amanda find him dead, apparently having committed suicide. Mark doesn't believe his friend would do so, and his investigation lead him to a series of suicides associated with the Perfect Couple dating service. To aid in the investigation, Jack joins the dating service as an eligible bachelor.

"Call Me Incontestable" displays symptoms of the following tropes:

  • Always Murder: Subverted. A woman's ex-husband committed suicide to make sure she wouldn't get the money from his lucrative life insurance policy. She killed two more people in similar ways to make it look like someone was targeting clients of her dating service, so the suicide would look like murder and she'd get the money.
  • Asshole Victim: Well, Ralph Trager killed himself purely out of spite for his wife, and Jerome Koetchner apparently hit Gloria, so they aren't the biggest loss to the world. Alex Forman doesn't seem to fit the bill, however.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The bags that Tonya makes herself with Velcro, which turn out to be the way she was able to bind men for the fake suicides without leaving any marks.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Clete Kinley to anyone that dates his ex-wife Gloria. The fact that he so much considers her his property that he yells "no trespassing" before decking Jack should be the biggest hint.
  • Hanging Around: This is the suicide method Tonya was using the in the murders, as this is the method Ralph used to actually kill himself.
  • Make It Look Like A Suicide:: Inverted and Invoked. Tonya Gilpin was trying to make her ex's suicide look like it was a murder by killing other men involved with her dating service, then making their murders look like murders that were disguised as suicide hoping to collect on the husband's insurance policy.
  • Spiteful Suicide: Tonya's ex-husband Ralph utterly despised her and wanted her broke. However, the conditions of their divorce forced him to take out a $1,000,000 life insurance policy with her as the beneficiary. When he learned about the incontestable clause, he killed himself in order to insure she wouldn't get a nickel. As a particular "fuck you" to his ex, he waited precisely 1 year and 11 months in order to do so.
