- Comically Missing the Point: Calvin is making a poster to try to get others to help him find Hobbes, and his mom recommends he describe him. Calvin starts giving the rundown of Hobbes's personality, from his perspective of Hobbes as a living being, before Mom says that she meant what he looks like physically.
- Dramatic Irony: Susie asks Calvin if he'd like to come to her tea party, and he blows her off because he's looking for Hobbes. The audience is aware that Hobbes is actually at Susie's tea party, since she found him after the dog dropped him.
- I Kiss Your Hand: Calvin does this to Susie when he realizes she's found Hobbes for him.
- Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Either Calvin or Hobbes stole all of Susie's cookies from her tea party. It's clear the implication is that it's supposed to be Hobbes, since Susie had her back turned when Calvin showed up, but there's just enough ambiguity to leave room for those who believe Hobbes is a stuffed doll.
