Tropes

  • Comically Missing the Point: Calvin asks Hobbes to scare him to try to shake his hiccups. Hobbes starts reciting assorted facts about how the Earth is becoming more and more polluted thanks to the actions of humans. Calvin, of course, meant that he wanted to get surprised.
  • The Gadfly: Hobbes knows darn well that Calvin has the hiccups by virtue of the fact that he...well, keeps hiccupping, but still gives him a hard time when he can't finish his sentences and acts like he doesn't know what's going on.
  • Here We Go Again!: Calvin's hiccups go away by themselves at the end of the arc...only for Hobbes to successfully jump scare Calvin by attacking him, which brings his hiccups back, even worse than they were before.
  • Hiccup Hijinks: The central conflict of the arc is Calvin getting the hiccups and trying to find some way to get rid of them.
  • Jump Scare: Hobbes does one of these to Calvin in order to cure his hiccups. Only problem is Calvin had stopped hiccupping on his own seconds prior, and the scare just brings them back even worse.
