The recent death of Max by Kovac's men causes a rift between Booth and Brennan that results in Booth and Aubrey teaming up to investigate a murder out in Newfoundland. Back in D.C., Brennan, still reeling from her father's death, receives a visit from former lover Tim "Sully" Sullivan.

- The Bus Came Back: Sully, Bones's other FBI Love Interest. He appeared for four episodes in Season 2, then went off sailing, claiming he'll return. It took him 10 years to do so; he justifies this on the reasoning that he always knew Brennan was never going to choose him, so he stayed away so that he could convince himself he would be "the one that got away".
- Hollywood Law: Even though the crime occurred in Canada, somehow Booth and Aubrey run the entire investigation.
- Long-Lost Relative: The Jeffersonian team are able to prove that the victim was related to a woman whose property she visited, and therefore her surviving sister is the woman's niece.
