Recap / Bones S 12 E 7 The Scare In The Score

Go To

A series of corpses connected to Booth's former Army unit appear around D.C., causing Booth to worry for his family's safety and try and find the killer himself while placing his and Brennan's two children along with Brennan's father Max into protective custody at a safehouse. Brennan believes her father is hiding something from her, only for Max to reveal that he had a pacemaker installed. The safehouse is attacked, leaving several agents dead, and Max is taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound that later proves fatal. Booth learns the killer is Mark Kovac, the son of a war criminal he killed 20 years ago now seeking revenge.

Tropes

  • Almost Dead Guy: Max wakes up after surgery, has a long conversation with Brennan, then flatlines.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Having learned that torture is insufficient even for a defrocked priest who's fallen to heroin, the bad guy take to torturing an old woman in front of less fallen soldiers to make them talk.
  • Hope Spot: Max hid a hospital visit; turns out he "only" got a pacemaker. Unfortunately the pacemaker's GPS allowed trained assassins to track him and the grandkids to an FBI safehouse. Fortunately they survive the encounter; unfortunately he dies in the hospital after the attack proved too much for his heart (he was able to say goodbye, in a way, to Brennan).
  • Killed Off for Real: Brennan's dad, peacefully(!) of heart failure after saving his grandkids by killing two assassins. This was after setting up a hope-spot: a mysterious hospital bracelet he's hiding from Brennan which turns out to be from a secret pacemaker operation; unfortunately the pacemaker's GPS allows the killers to track him to an FBI safehouse.
  • Mid-Season Twist: The safehouse where Bones and Booth hid their kids is attacked, numerous FBI agents killed on screen, Bones's father dies in the hospital, and Booth learns that his past is coming back to haunt him.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Cam loves to watch the "Home Super Mall", which is not the "Home Shopping Network".
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Kovac’s attack on the safe house in retaliation for Booth killing his father during his sniper career.
  • Torture Always Works: A horrifying example: someone who's after Booth, but doesn't actually know his name, captures one of the men in his old army unit, but after having failed to extract info from another of Booth's comrades (see below), they also abduct an innocent old lady and torture her in front of Booth's friend until he breaks and gives up his name. ...And then, they kill the old lady and move on to torture Booth's friend For the Evulz for one week.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Max Keenan took down a team of elite Serbian assassins after the latter took down a team of federal agents.
    Booth: They weren't expecting Max.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Max Keenan killing several of Kovac’s lackeys with his bare hands when they attack the safe house he and his grandkids are in.
