  • Bilingual Bonus: The magazine Manny is shown does indeed say 'Big and beardy' in Japanese.
  • Comically Missing the Point: A disgruntled customer walks over to a smoking Bernard:
Customer: You know, I'm probably getting a lot of secondhand smoke from you.
Bernard: Don't worry about it. Buy me a drink some time.
    • The police officer thinks Fran And Bernard are Manny's parents.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The opening scene plays out like a strict parent and a wayward teenager.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: "Let me smell your breath. I thought so. Chips!"
  • Good-Times Montage: As Manny gets wealthier and more friends.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Bernard thinks David Beckham is either black or Gary Lineker. He has also never heard of Pokemon.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Bernard does this with mangled syntax:
Manny: I've been out with some friends.
    Bernard: Out? Friends? Some? With?
  • Take That!: "This isn't Waterstones!"
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Fran does not hold back in her fight with Bernard:
Fran: You don't talk! You just sit there and scowl and you smoke and you make hurtful remarks about people. You just sit there, and you snipe and sneer and you moan! You carp and you complain, you damn and blast, and you burn and bludgeon everything, until there's nothing left except ashes and bones! You never wanted him here in the first place. Oh, now he's gone, now you're happy. Oh, that's fine. As long as you're happy. As long as you're happy, everything's fine!
