The Walshes decide to tell Brandon the truth: that Karla isn't Anna's niece nor from East L.A., but in witness protection after witnessing a child get murdered in a drive-by shooting. • Ethnic Menial Labor: Karla points out to Brandon Latine immigrants in East L.A. jumping on trucks to get to low paying work outside the neighbourhood, most likely for the rich in Beverly Hills.
  • Murder by Mistake: The real reason Karla is at West Beverly. She witnessed a four-year-old get shot in the head as a result of gang violence and is in witness protection.
  • Witness Protection: Karla has to testify against the gang and is protected by the police. She stays with Anna and they pretend that Karla is her niece, so it's a double protection for her to attend school in Beverly Hills.
