Recap / Barney & Friends S1 E5 "Eat, Drink and Be Healthy!"

Go To

Shawn plans to give his carrot sticks to Zippity, as he doesn't care for them. When Luci suggests he should try them, it leads Barney and his friends to discover the joys of eating healthy with the help of the four food groups. From making Mish Mash Soup to a silly story about being a picky eater, the gang has fun learning about the foods that help keep our bodies fit. Barney's friend and singer James Turner joins in the fun to show how farmers grow various foods and how a bird's "silly supper" differs from most people's cuisine. As one last surprise, Barney throws a healthy snack picnic for his friends. With one left over carrot, Barney encourages Shawn to give them one more try. Suddenly, Shawn is a fan of carrots, ending a fun day with plenty of "food for thought."

This episode contains examples of:

  • Eating Pet Food: Subverted and lampshaded.
Barney: Hey, I thought those carrots were for Zippity!
Tina: Eww, we're eating hamster food?!
  • Food Songs Are Funny: Many of the episode's songs qualify, but "Silly Supper", which discusses a bird's cuisine of various insects, deserves special mention.
  • I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham: Shawn initially claims he doesn't like carrots, giving his carrot sticks to his friends (after offering them to Zippity). At Barney's insistence, he tries a carrot at the end of the episode and immediately changes his tune.
  • Punny Title: The episode title is a play on the phrase "Eat, drink, and be merry."
  • Science Marches On: A minor example. The same year this episode initially aired, the US switched from the aforementioned "Four Food Groups" to the "Food Pyramid". It doesn't affect the episode's overall message of eating healthy, however.
