Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unknown if it led to something more, but Asher did get close with Vanessa during the summer trip to Mexico. Olivia at least assumes that they were into it.
  • Graceful Loser: J.J. congratulates Jordan for retaining his QB position.
  • Iron Lady: The new Coach Montez is much more stern than Billy. However, Olivia points out that she has to be, considering how hard it is for a woman to be recognized as a sports coach, much less football.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Despite him trying to minimalize damage, both Darnell and Chris end up being upset at Spencer, Darnell because he thinks he didn't vouch for him, Chris because Spencer admits that he actually vouched for Darnell.
  • Plagiarism in Fiction: J.P. took songs that Patience wrote and gave them to another artist without giving her proper credit.
  • Sadistic Choice: Spencer has to choose sides between vouching for Darnell or Chris for the quarterback position.
  • We Really Do Care: Billy's heart-to-heart talk with Frausto essentially sends a message that he really does know all of the team members. An ever bigger one is when the Chargers players, who disrespected Billy by departing earlier, end up showing up to the field to clean it up.
