Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder: It's implied that Spencer and Olivia hooked up during the summer, when they were separated from Layla and Asher, respectively. This is why it becomes awkward when the two return to Los Angeles.
  • Adoption Angst: Simone is remorseful for having to give up her baby son for adoption.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Patience claims that J.P. Keating is this, which was why she left her tour early.
  • Broken Pedestal: Even though he seemed okay with it last season, it turns out Jordan is really not happy that Spencer transferred, as they made a pact to become brothers after all.
  • Must Make Amends: Monique says that she is making amends about her brother's misdeeds. The first thing she does in the episode is to pull some strings to have Preach released from prison.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Superintendent Carter raised the GPA requirement for players of South Crenshaw High Chargers, making it harder for the team to operate.
  • Offscreen Breakup: Grace broke up with Micah during the summer. She merely says that they were safe choices for each other, and she didn't want him to end up with a safe choice.
  • Reformed Bully: Billy apologizes to Carter for bullying him, but the latter isn't ready to forgive him.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Billy and the rest of the Chargers bullied Carter during high school. It was so bad that he had to transfer to a boarding school, separating him from his family. It is the second part that Carter will never forgive Billy for.
