"1-Adam-12, 1-Adam-12, please respond to a 10-101 ... sighting of tropes seen in this episode":

  • Being Personal Isn't Professional: After Stenzler, Reed's close friend from the Los Angeles Police Academy (and, it is implied, before), is badly wounded trying to bust a supermarket robbery, he is sent back out on patrol. Malloy decides this would be a good time to help Reed learn how to focus on the job and put unfortunate incidents like this out of mind, and has him handle several calls. To Reed's credit, he does well as he helps arrest a Drunk Driver, responds to a disturbance at a pool hall and apprehend a gang of teenaged burglars. Although in between calls, Reed freely expresses his feelings and worries about Stenzler and what Jean (Reed's wife) must be thinking.
  • Heroes Gone Fishing: In the opening scene, Reed and Stenzler are planning a fishing trip. Tragically, it'll never come to pass.
  • The '60s: Malloy flashing a peace sign at a group of mini-skirted young hotties at a taco stand. And – as a Freeze-Frame Bonus – the prices of the menu items, although indicative of California, reflect a time where one could get a pretty nutritious meal for less than $1.
  • You Are Not Alone: After learning that Stenzler had died from his injuries, Reed – talking to Malloy – tries to suggest that Jean will understand and come to accept the dangers that come with police work. Malloy reassures him: "You're not the first guy who's had the problem ... and you won't be the last. You'll work it out."
