"As I left, I remembered Farouk's last words, that physical death would be instantaneous, but that in the mind, it would take forever. 'Infinite, never-ending agony.' He'd meant that end for me, only to have it claim him, instead. I was in his mind when he died. It was like a guided tour of hell."

Without warning, Jean felt an agonizing snap within her own brain... and found herself inside Annie's mind — hearing Annie's thoughts, experiencing her emotions! Around her was impenetrable darkness. Facing her, a glowing image of Annie, whole and unharmed.
Jean embraced Annie's soul-self, trying to protect her as the darkness closed in on them. But the lifeglow faded. Annie was dying and there was nothing either child could do to prevent it. Finally, the glow disappeared, leaving Jean alone in the dark, her arms holding empty air.
Again, she felt a snap — less painful this time — and found herself back in herself once more... cradling her best friend's corpse.

"I was connected to its memory... When it fired... I felt it die... Like I was dying. I was scared."
